In the beginning was the eye

The opening words of the Bible, “In the beginning was the Word” are transformed here to “In the beginning was the eye”. This extraordinary art film comes from a variety of impulses and is thought-provoking for many observations, beginning with the contrast between image and word. And in order to do this, Bady Minck, using a vast technical cross-section, falls upon a rather canny ploy to use postcards: that are both containers and conveyors of photographs and text. Sometimes they are notes transmitting moods and stories, contrasting the snapshot of the landscape that they capture. He thus builds a history of the development of the old mining town of Eisenerz and of the clichés on Austria, that spans from the last century to the present. And in the transformations – as attested by the the 1800 postcards taken from the director’s collection of 15 thousand – one is aware of the reprimand to all of humanity for the colonisation of the environment. But, in the end, the landscape reacts and takes action.
