The Milano Design Film Festival is a cultural platform that uses the language of film to bring the general public closer to the most contemporary concepts of design and architecture.
An annual appointment – held in different venues in Milan at the end of November – MDFF showcases films by designers and films on design by filmmakers and artists that explore new trends and interpret design from different perspectives, broadening the context and meanings of the discipline, showing new visions of it, and investigating the language of the moving image as an element of design research.
The Festival consists of five sections, three open applications and two curatorated sections, with two Awards, as well as special events and talks.
Submission for two sections are now open:
The MDFF22 Official Selection presents an international program with the best and the newest design-related film productions as well as designers’ films.
Between films, documentaries, short and feature-length films, animated films, art videos, stories about designers of the past and present and visual research, the programme aims to explore themes related to design, defining and representing them in broad contexts (products and furniture, environment and sustainability, visual communication, representation and data analysis, food, mobility, fashion, and so on).
The 10 films chosen through a call by a selection committee composed of Domitilla Dardi, Federica Sala and Cristiana Perrella will be screened during the three days of the festival.
There are no limitations on length, content, theme, or genre, but it is mandatory to submit works produced within the last three years.
Special attention will be given to films presented as premières.
A project by Milano Design Film Festival in partnership with the Order of Architects P.P.C of the Province of Milan and its Foundation.
The AFA Prize promotes the relationship between film and architecture and the use of the moving image by architects. The Prize has two categories:
Medium and feature-length films that chronicle projects and authors of architecture from all eras.
Videos and short films commissioned by architectural and design firms to promote their design activities or as an element of research and visualization of projects.
There are also two phases of the Prize:
Pre-selection by the MDFF selection committee of 10 films that will be part of the 2022 Festival programme; and the Selection of the winning films in the two categories by an international jury.
Participation is open to persons over 21 years of age of any nationality. Their works must have been carried out during the two-year period 2020-2022 and must be unreleased in Italy.
The selected films will be screened during the festival as part of the AFA Section.
An international jury will be in charge of selecting the best films. It will be officially announced soon.
