Arquiteturas Film Festival Lisboa

First edition: 2013
Next edition: 12th-16th October 2016
Organization: Do you Mean Architecture
Direction and Programming: Sofia Mourato
Based in: Lisboa, Portugal

Arquiteturas is the first international film festival in Portugal to screen documentary, experimental, animation and fiction films about architecture. The festival focuses on the growing global interest in interdisciplinary approaches to contemporary architecture. It uses the power of moving images as a tool for broadening public understanding and appreciation of architecture. Arquiteturas presents relevant documentaries, fiction and experimental films that expose both Portuguese and international contemporary architecture as well as the permanent dialogue between city, space and narrative. Besides screenings we have several activities that enhance architecture multidisciplinary such as informal talks, thesis presentations, masterclasses, workshops, installations, a bookshop and a guide tour.
For Sofia Mourato, founder/director of Arquiteturas and curator in similar festivals in NY and Rotterdam “the relationships between cinema and architecture are underdeveloped in Portugal.” With the Year of Architecture declaration as well as the scope of the Lisbon Architecture Trienalle, we believe that this is the right moment to invest on this festival “On one hand, the growing interest in Portuguese architecture and its world renowned prestige. On the other hand a cinema and image industry eager for new solutions to make their assets profitable”.

AFFL for Festival on Festival, 24th May
The architecture film festival in Lisbon has always been concerned with the artistic diversity that inspires filmmakers of different genres to use architecture to tell stories. The selection for the Festival on Festival, concerning the theme “Design after Design”, showcases three Portuguese examples that portrait the effect of architecture design in people’s environment and subsequently in the construction of their memory of a place and cultural heritage – a documentary road movie that explores the travels of the architect Fernando Távora (1960, Rodrigo Areias, Portugal 2013, 65′); a fiction tale that portraits the poetics of a specific neighbourhood ’s reality (Bela Vista, Filipa Reis and João Miller Guerra, Portugal 2012, 30′) and a experimental photographic trip with Lisbon as a main character (Cinza/Ashes, Micael Espinha, Portugal 2014, 10′).
